Stretched Canvas / Gallery Wrap: Quick Links
Stretched Canvas vs Gallery Wrap; What Is the Difference Between Them
In a nutshell, a stretched canvas (see images/examples on Amazon) is a canvas that is pulled tightly over a wooden frame (called stretcher bars).
As you can see by the examples on Amazon, stretched canvases come in many different shapes, sizes, and thicknesses.
Today, the staples used to attach the canvas to the wooden frame are commonly located on the back of the canvas. But, sometimes stretched canvases have staples on the sides.
What Does Gallery Wrapped Canvas Mean?
A Gallery wrapped canvas, sometimes called splined canvas, is a specific type of stretched canvas that usually has the following features:
- The stretched canvas has sides that are 1.25 inches thick or more.
- Has sides that are free of staples and the corners of the canvas are folded and neatly tucked around the sides.
- The image/artwork appears on the sides of the canvas as well as the front.

Can Gallery Wrapped Canvas Be Framed?
Even though many people prefer to hang gallery wrapped canvas art without a frame, you can definitely frame them!
The frame that is trending right now for gallery wrapped canvas art is called a floating frame (Amazon). This type of frame adds a nice finished look to canvas art, while still allowing the edges of the canvas to show.
Cheapest Top-Quality Gallery Wrapped Canvas Prints and Paintings
Here are my favorite places to get the cheapest, high-quality gallery wrapped canvas prints and paintings.
If I’m looking for super inexpensive gallery wrapped canvas prints or paintings, I’ll usually browse through Etsy and Amazon and read the reviews until I find something I like with a 4 or 5-star rating.
Some other places I love to find gallery wrapped canvas prints are iCanvas and Inktuitive. These sites have top-quality canvas prints at super discounted prices. Plus, iCanvas has free shipping in the contiguous United States, and Inktuitive has free shipping to most locations around the world!
Another place I like to buy gallery wrapped canvas prints is Minted (you can also get custom gallery wrapped canvas paintings and prints made from a Minted artist). You’ll end up paying slightly more for these canvas prints, but they’re of premium quality and are limited editions, so they’re more valuable than most canvas prints.
And, last but not least, if I’m looking to buy gallery wrapped canvas paintings and prints as an investment, Saatchi Art is where I go! Just like Minted, their gallery wrapped canvas prints are usually limited editions. And their paintings and prints are curated by a team of professionals and are usually more valuable (but a little more expensive) than the canvas art from the sites mentioned above.
So, go ahead and buy between stretched and gallery wrapped canvas art, support independent artists, and HAVE FUN shopping!
