Etsy is a legit online marketplace and a publicly-traded company on the stock market. I mean, how legit can a company get? lol

Plus, Etsy.com (similar to Amazon Handmade by Amazon.com) has been one of my favorite places to buy handmade and vintage items online since 2011.

Why?

Because Etsy sellers sell almost EVERYTHING, you can find amazingly unique products, and it’s completely safe (…if you follow my tips below).

So in this post, let’s look at how we can tell if Etsy sellers and their products are legit.

Shopping on Etsy’s Online Marketplace & Paying Sellers

One of the biggest concerns for most people shopping anywhere online is whether or not it’s safe to give a website their credit or debit card information.

On Etsy, buyers have several ways to pay for products, but sellers choose which payment methods they will accept.

The most popular ways to pay for items on Etsy are via credit cards, debit cards, PayPal, and Etsy gift cards.

All of these payment options use Etsy’s secure checkout system, commonly called Etsy Payments.

In a nutshell, Etsy keeps records associated with transactions on Etsy Payments and does not give any secure data to the sellers.

This means that your credit card or debit card numbers, or any other financial information, are kept safe and away from sellers.

Etsy sellers will only receive shipping information and a few other necessary pieces of information they need to complete an order (including product info, any instructions for customizable products, the total amount paid, the buyer’s preferred delivery method, etc).

The best part about Etsy Payments?

You can pay for multiple products from different Etsy shops at the same time.

Tips on How to Stay Safe When Shopping on Etsy

  • Make sure to never give your card number or password over the phone, in an email, or any messaging system.
  • Etsy can’t confirm or help with payments made outside of their own online checkout system or PayPal. This is why it’s better if you can pay for items through Etsy’s site, instead of sending payments like cheques or money orders directly to the seller.
  • If you see an unauthorized charge from Etsy on your credit card statement, contact Etsy’s customer service right away.

How To Tell if an Etsy Seller Is Legit

Is it safe to buy from all Etsy sellers?

No. But most Etsy sellers are really great, trustworthy, and kind artisans.

Other the other hand, unfortunately, some Etsy sellers in the past have proven themselves to be scam artists.

If you’ve been researching Etsy reviews online, you’ll soon find out that many negative reviews come from buyers with complaints about sellers.

The truth is:

Etsy does not screen its sellers. All you have to do to start selling on Etsy.com is register for an account.

But there’s a way to tell if an Etsy seller is a good, reliable person. And, it’s by reading the seller’s customer reviews…

Etsy Sellers vs Buyer Reviews

Etsy has a 5-star review system.

An Etsy buyer has 100 days to write a review after the estimated delivery date of their order. They can also edit their review as many times as they want during this 100 day period.

Reading reviews is a good way to find out if a seller is legit in many categories, such as:

  • Product quality
  • Shipping and delivery times
  • Customer service
  • Handling of returns, replacements, and refunds

As a super cautious online shopper, my personal rule of thumb is to NOT buy from Etsy sellers with less than a 4-star rating. And, they must have at least 20 reviews. Yet, the more reviews I get to read, the better!

Etsy’s Buyer Protection

If something goes wrong with your purchase, Etsy also offers buyer protection.

Here are a few steps to follow:

  1. Etsy leaves refund, return, and exchange policies up to the sellers. If you have a question about a recent order, the seller is the best person to ask. You can also check the sellers’ return policies by looking to the right of any Etsy item, and clicking on “See Return Policy”, under the Shipping & Returns section.
  2. If you and the seller can’t resolve a problem with your order, you may be qualified to open a case.
  3. Once open a case, Etsy can become a mediator, working with you and the seller on whatever issues you may have.

Are All Handmade & Vintage Products on Etsy Legit?

Unfortunately, not all items sold on Etsy are authentic or genuine.

Throughout the years, I’ve definitely found some scams where sellers were selling “fake stuff” (counterfeit products) on Etsy like imitation jewelry, watches, and handbags.

But, this is why I don’t buy from sellers with less than a 4-star rating or without many reviews (sorry, but I’ll let other buyers risk it).

Fortunately, you can usually find out if products being sold on Etsy are fake by carefully reading through the sellers’ reviews.

Overview: Is Etsy a Legit and Safe Site?

Yes! Etsy is a great and legit online marketplace. And, as long as you take the time to look over an Etsy seller’s reputation, you’ll be able to safely shop on Etsy!

Like I mentioned before, my friends and I have been shopping on Etsy for over 9 years and we’ve never had an issue with fraud. The sellers we bought from were top-notch. And, in the rare cases that we needed to return something, it was hassle-free.

The two main keys to staying safe on Etsy are:

  1. Read the sellers’ reviews that were written by other buyers! Get to know Etsy sellers through other customers’ shopping experiences.
  2. Make sure you only pay for items through Etsy’s checkout system (Etsy Payments).
