Online Art Site Reviews

1. Etsy

We’ll kick off this list with Etsy. They’re a company based in the United States with a well-earned reputation for being a fun way for people to buy a variety of vintage and homemade items, including artwork, prints, and digital prints.

Editor’s Rating:

Type of Artwork Sold:

  • Prints
  • Photography
  • Paintings
  • Sculptures
  • Drawings
  • And more!

About Etsy

Etsy is a unique and safe way for people to buy a variety of affordable art directly from artists.

This site also offers so many other handmade and vintage items, such as jewelry & accessories, clothing, home decor, wedding supplies, craft supplies, and so much more!

>>> Click this link to learn more about Etsy.

What I Like

  1. You can buy directly from independent artisans worldwide.
  2. This site also has an amazing review system. You can read about the quality of items and people’s shopping experiences with specific sellers.
  3. You’ll find a variety of prices, but most items are low-priced ($$ – $$$).
  4. Etsy’s customer support is also very reliable, and ready to help if a dispute happens between a seller and buyer.

What I Don’t Like

  1. Note all sellers ship internationally.
  2. When you find something you really like, but it’s being sold by a new seller, there won’t be any reviews about the seller and the quality of the items they’re selling.

Pros

  • Amazing variety of unique items
  • Most items are very affordable
  • They have a great review system.
  • Etsy has excellent customer support

Cons

  • New sellers don’t have reviews about their customer service/items
  • Not all sellers ship internationally

2. iCanvas

A little known gem in the print industry is definitely iCanvas. This American based company has a well-earned reputation for having high-quality, curated art prints for VERY low prices.

Editor’s Rating:

Type of Artwork Sold:

  • Framed canvas prints
  • Unframed canvas prints
  • Framed prints
  • 1, 2, or 3-piece canvas prints

About iCanvas

When it comes to buying prints for myself or for gifts, iCanvas is usually the first place I’ll visit.

iCanvas is a curated site that showcases the most popular artwork and artists in the world. You’ll find a great collection of famous, classic, modern, and contemporary prints. They’re also known for their selection of photography, pop art, and street art.

>>> Click this link to learn more about iCanvas.

What I Like

  1. You get a lot of bang for your buck. The prices are amazingly cheap, but the quality remains very high. You’ll usually find discounted artwork on iCanvas, but most items are already very affordable to begin ($$ – $$$).
  2. They ship internationally but if you’re in the United States you can enjoy FREE shipping.
  3. iCanvas’ customer support is also excellent and they have countless raving reviews online.

What I Don’t Like

  1. I wish the canvases would come with two hangers, instead of one. It’s just a minor thing, but two hangers would keep the canvas straighter all the time.
  2. iCanvas has a lot of reviews for the company as a whole, but there’s not a lot of reviews for specific artwork or designs yet (like Etsy or Amazon does).
Canvas Art Prints by iCanvas | Art For Everyone

Pros

  • The prints are EXTREMELY affordable.
  • Very well curated with a large selection of popular artwork and photography.
  • They ship worldwide from the United States
  • They have FREE shipping to the contiguous United States.
  • Their customer service is excellent.

Cons

  • Canvases only come with one hanger
  • They don’t have many reviews for specific artwork/designs.

3. Amazon Handmade

If you’ve never heard of Amazon before, then you might be living under a rock. But most people don’t know that they have a separate online department called Amazon Handmade.

Very similar to Etsy, Amazon Handmade is a store within Amazon where artisans can sell their handcrafted items, including their artwork.

Editor’s Rating:

Type of Artwork Sold:

  • Drawings
  • Mixed Media
  • Paintings
  • Photographs
  • Posters
  • Prints
  • And other handmade items

About Amazon

Amazon Handmade is a fun and safe way for people to buy a variety of affordable art directly from artists around the world.

You can also buy artwork fulfilled by Amazon. This means that Amazon will be responsible for shipping and customer service.

Amazon Handmade also offers so many other handcrafted items, such as jewelry, home decor, kitchen accessories, clothing, accessories, a wedding shop, and a handmade gift shop, and so much more!

>>> Click this link to learn more about Amazon Handmade.

What I Like

  1. Similar to Etsy, you can buy directly from independent artisans worldwide. But I also like the option to buy artwork fulfilled by Amazon (a very trusted company).
  2. This site is also known for their amazing review system, so even if you buy directly from an artist, you’ll know what you’re getting into.
  3. You’ll find a variety of prices, but most items are very low-priced ($$ – $$$).
  4. Most artists ship worldwide.
  5. Amazon’s customer support is amazing!

What I Don’t Like

  1. Amazon Handmade doesn’t have as many items for sale as compared to Etsy, but they’re still fairly new to the art scene.
  2. When you find something you really like, but it’s being sold by a new seller without reviews (and not fulfilled by Amazon) it’s hard to trust that you’ll get a high-quality item with good customer service.

Other than that, I really can’t complain about Amazon. It’s my go-to store for just about ANYTHING.

Made for You (Amazon Handmade)

Pros

  • You’re usually buying from emerging artists, meaning items are very affordable.
  • They have one of the best review systems in the world.
  • Amazon has excellent customer support.
  • There are plenty of items fulfilled by Amazon (which means Amazon is responsible for shipping and customer service).
  • Most items are shipped internationally

Cons

  • They don’t have as many pieces of art compared to Etsy (but Amazon Handmade is still relatively new).
  • New sellers don’t have reviews so it’s hard to know anything about their customer service skills and the quality of the item they’re selling.

4. Redbubble

This company is what you call print-on-demand. Emerging artists from around the world upload their designs to Redbubble, and then that artwork can be printed on over 40 different items.

Wondering where they’re located? This company is truly a worldwide marketplace. They have a global network of manufacturers and they ship from the United States, the UK, Canada, Australia, the Netherlands, and Hong-Kong.

Editor’s Rating:

Type of Artwork Sold:

  • Art Prints
  • Canvas Prints
  • Framed prints
  • Metal Prints
  • Photographic Prints
  • Posters
  • Art board prints
  • And over 40 different items printed with the artists’ artwork

About Redbubble

At Redbubble, art fans can buy a variety of affordable art prints and over 40 different items, supporting emerging artists from around the world.

This site also offers many different items printed with the artists’ designs, like phone cases, laptop skins, laptop sleeves, stickers, greeting cards, home decor, stationery, bags, clothing, and more!

I think it’s worth mentioning that this company has a younger demographic than all the other stores mentioned on this page.

>>> Click this link to learn more about Redbubble.

What I Like

  1. Redbubble is known to have a lot of artwork for fans of a particular person, team, fictional series, etc. So if you’re a fan of something or someone, then you should definitely check out Redbubble.
  2. The artists set the prices, but most items are very affordable ($ – $$$).
  3. Redbubble is responsible for international shipping and customer service, and they do not disappoint!

What I Don’t Like

  1. The sides of the canvas prints are left white (the artwork doesn’t wrap around the canvas).
  2. I find the dresses, especially if they’re light-colored, are a bit see-through so I need to wear a slip underneath.
  3. Some customers have complained in the past that the designs on the t-shirts and hoodies were coming off after washing. So if you don’t feel like washing your clothes in cold water and hanging them to dry (like it says on the instructions), then you might want to think twice before buying shirts and hoodies.
  4. Redbubble only has customer reviews for products, but they don’t have reviews for specific designs. Although, sometimes you can see reviews about a particular design in the artists’ comments section.
Redbubble Products: Independent Art on Awesome Stuff

Pros

  • Have a lot of designs for fans of any subject.
  • They have 40+ different consumer products, including high-quality prints.
  • The customer service is excellent.
  • They ship from different countries so that you get your items quicker.

Cons

  • The sides of the canvas prints are left white.
  • The dresses can be a bit see-through if they’re light-colored.
  • In the past, some people have complained that the design on their t-shirts and hoodies would come off after washing.
  • They only have customer reviews for different products and not for specific designs.

5. Society6

Very similar to Redbubble, Society6 is another one of my favorite print-on-demand companies. Based in the United States, emerging artists from around the world can upload their designs and have their artwork printed on over 60 different items.

Editor’s Rating:

Type of Artwork Sold:

  • Art prints
  • Framed art prints
  • Wall hangings
  • Posters
  • Canvas prints
  • Mini framed art prints
  • Mini art prints
  • Metal prints
  • Wood wall art
  • And over 60 different items printed with the artists’ artwork

About Society6

Very similar to Redbubble, Society6 offers a variety of affordable art prints and over 60 different items, promoting emerging artists from all over the world. But I find that, compared to Redbubble, they have a more mature demographic.

This site also offers many different items printed with the artists’ designs, like furniture, home decor, pillows, bedding, bath accessories, phone cases, laptop sleeves, laptop skins, stickers, stationery, clothes, mugs, coasters, bags, and more.

>>> Click this link to learn more about Society6.

What I Like

  1. I don’t know why or how they did it, but I find the artwork on Society6 to be extra remarkable. They’re really attracting some incredibly talented artists.
  2. Society6 sets most of them (except for some of the art prints), but most items are very affordable ($ – $$$).
  3. You can read reviews on the site. You can find out what other shoppers think of Society6’s products. They’ve also begun allowing people to review specific designs.
  4. Society6 is responsible for international shipping and their customer service team is known to be one of the best and kindest teams out there (and I agree).

What I Don’t Like

  1. One thing I don’t like is that their small carry-all pouches are cropped slightly more than the image shown on Society6’s website.
  2. I’m not a fan of the rugs because they’re so thin and more like a thick piece of fabric. I also don’t find the sides of the rugs are 100% straight (but I’m really picky).
  3. The hand, bath, and beach towels seem to run on the thin side as well. I’m a fan of thick, fluffy towels. Another thing is that the design is only printed on one side of the towels, and the other side is white (but that doesn’t really bother me too much).
  4. If your order is to be delivered outside of the United States, you might be waiting a while. International shipping usually takes 1-3 weeks, but I’ve read reviews where customers said that they had to wait up to 5 weeks to receive their order.
Society6 Art Prints – Start to Finish

Pros

  • 60+ different consumer products, including high-quality prints
  • Most artwork sold on Society6 is extra remarkable.
  • Customer service is one of the best in the industry
  • International shipping

Cons

  • Their carry-all pouches are cropped a bit more than the image shown on Society6
  • The rugs, hand & bath towels, and beach towels are all thinner than I would like
  • Shipping can be a bit on the slow side if you don’t live in the contiguous United States

6. Minted

Based in the United States, Minted known for their beautifully designed invitations and stationery, but they also offer wall art as well!

SPECIAL PROMOTION!!!

>>> Click this link to get FREE shipping & FREE returns every day on fine art prints & wall murals with code SHIPFREE at Minted!

Editor’s Rating:

Type of Artwork Sold:

  • Fine art prints (limited Editions, art on canvas)
  • Wall murals
  • Children’s art (from nursery to teen)
  • Photography
  • And over 60 different stationery and invitations printed with the artists’ artwork

About Minted

Minted is one of the most interesting American companies I’ve come across in awhile.

One of the most interesting aspects of this art site is that they hold regular art contests that are open for ANYONE to submit their work. And then anyone, INCLUDING YOU, can act as a judge and rate the artists’ submissions.

Minted is basically using consumer votes to help predict the next best-seller!

Not only do winning artists get paid cash prize, but then they keep earning from the sales of their designs on Minted. The artists also get to open their own online stores on Minted, where they can keep sharing their art with the world. And Minted is in charge of the manufacturing, shipping, and customer service (which is what I’m about to review soon).

And we, the voters, are exposed to some of the best emerging artists in the world!

More than 2,000 designs are submitted by artists to Minted every week. So get voting or start browsing the site to find art that you love!

>>> Click this link to learn more about Minted.

What I Like

  1. I love their curated/crowdsourcing business model. The consumers decide which artists get into the Minted collection! How cool is that?
  2. I love that they have a page with a list of all their active coupon codes. I especially love the FREE shipping and returns (this specific promotion is for within the US only).
  3. You can get original artwork made just for you, starting at $79 US!
  4. You can text a picture of your wall and a Minted stylist will text you back fine art recommendations that would fit and look great! And it’s FREE! (Learn more about this service.)

What I Don’t Like

  1. Their site can be a little glitchy at times, especially while making invitations.
  2. More info to come soon!
Surprising the Winner of Minted’s “The Most Wonderful Time” 2015 Holiday Card Challenge

Pros

  • They always have a bunch of active coupon codes!
  • You can get commissioned original art.
  • Get FREE advice on what artwork would look great on your walls.
  • You get to rate artists’ work. How fun is that?!!

Cons

  • Coming soon!

7. Saatchi Art

And the last art site I want to talk about is another American based company, Saatchi Art. This site is different from all of the other sites I already talked about on this page because it focuses more on original artwork, limited editions, and buying art as an investment.

Editor’s Rating:

Type of Artwork Sold:

  • Original Paintings
  • Photography
  • Drawings
  • Sculptures
  • Prints
  • Limited editions

About Saatchi Art

If you’re wanting to invest in art, then you definitely have to check out Saatchi Art. They give people a traditional art gallery experience online.

But unlike traditional galleries, Saatchi Art features more than 500,000 pieces from over 60,000 emerging artists around the world. So you can definitely find artwork you will love.

>>> Click this link to learn more about Saatchi Art.

What I Like

  1. Saatchi Art features a lot of emerging artists that come from all around the world, so you can find all styles of artwork.
  2. Compared to traditional galleries, the prices are fairly low and the shipping cost is already included in the price of the artwork.
  3. Professionally curated, I think Saatchi Art is one of the easiest and most convenient places to invest in art and start a collection. And they’re very helpful to beginner art collectors.
  4. In my opinion, the best part about Saatchi art is their FREE advisory service to help you pick out artwork. Whatever kind of artwork you are looking to buy, your personal curator will pick out 30 works of art for you to browse through.

What I Don’t Like

  1. Compared to the other art sites mentioned in this article, the prices of the artwork are much higher ($$$-$$$$). But, if you want to buy art as an investment, this is definitely the place to go.
  2. Saatchi art offers excellent customer service, but the shipping is the artists’ responsibility. This is a little problematic because Saatchi Art doesn’t have a review system where customers can review specific artists.
Saatchi Art’s Complimentary Art Advisory Service

Pros

  • Professionally curated, gives you a traditional gallery experience online
  • Best place to learn about investing in art (for beginners)
  • Shipping costs are already included in the price of the artwork
  • FREE advisory service to help you pick out artwork
  • International shipping

Cons

  • Prices are much higher compared to the other sites mentioned in this article
  • Customers can’t leave reviews about specific artists
  • Artists are responsible for shipping

Summary: Best Place to Buy Art

Everyone is going to end up with their favorite places to buy art online. These are only 6 of the sites that I keep going back to.

If you’re looking for original art, I would check out Etsy or I would browse through Amazon Handmade. If I were you, I would only go to Saatchi Art if you really want to be serious about collecting art as an investment or if you really want to buy what I call “prestigious art” (but that’s just my opinion).

When it comes to “normal” art prints to hang on my wall, I really like iCanvas because the prices are just so amazing and it’s hard to beat their free shipping service in the United States. Another place I’ve recently like to buy art prints is Minted. They’re a little more expensive, but the quality is superb and you can use my promo code for free shipping.

For the rest of the artwork I buy, including metal wall art and printed items like t-shirts or phone cases, I definitely choose Society6 or Redbubble. I don’t see much of a difference between these two sites except that Redbubble seems to have a younger demographic and Society6 has a more mature demographic. But I’ll usually search both sites until I find the artwork I want, and I’ll go from there.

I hope this article helped you out! Happy shopping!
