What Are the 7 Forms of Art?

Wondering what are the 7 different forms of art? You’re in the right place!

You often hear the term “Seven forms of Art” in humanities and cultural studies.

Humanities, the study of the human race, uses the seven arts to examine basic human activities and things like beliefs, emotions, ambitions, and events.

The seven arts include:

  1. Painting
  2. Sculpture
  3. Architecture
  4. Music and dance
  5. Literature
  6. Theatre
  7. Cinema

Painting

Painting is applying medium (the materials used by artists such as paint, pigment, or color) to a solid surface (such as a canvas, wood, or a wall). The medium is commonly applied to the surface with brushes. But knives, sponges, and other tools can also be used. The final product is also called a painting.

Paintings are an important form in the visual arts. In both Eastern and Western art, a big piece of the history of paintings is dominated by religious art. Most modern and contemporary art have moved away from the historic value of documentation in favor of self-expression and decorative works.

Sculpture

Sculptures are created by carving, modeling, or welding hard materials into works of art. Long-lasting sculpting originally used stone, metal, ceramics, and wood. But now there are many more materials and methods being used to create sculptures, like 3-D printing.

In the past, in many cultures, sculptures were very expensive. But they continued to be very important in religious worship and politics.

Architecture

Architecture is the art of planning, designing and constructing buildings and any other structures with some regard to aesthetic effect.

Architectural buildings are often viewed as artwork and cultural symbols. Additionally, historical civilizations are regularly identified by the remains of their architectural works of art.

Music and Dance

Loved by most people today, music and dance are an art form and cultural activity.

Music includes vocal and/or instrumental sounds blended in such a way as to produce rhythm, melody, harmony, and expression of emotion. In many cultures, music is an important part of people’s lives, as it plays an important part in religious rituals, ceremonies, and social activities.

Dancing involves one or more people moving rhythmically to music, typically following a set sequence of steps. Dance has been an important part of ceremonies, celebrations, and entertainment before primitive cultures.

It is not possible to know exactly when dance became a part of human culture because dance doesn’t leave behind objects like paintings, architecture, or sculptures.

Literature

Literature is any written work considered to have artistic or intellectual value, often due to using language in ways that differ from ordinary ways.

The plot is for more than just entertainment purposes. Different historical periods are reflected in literature. You can get so much information about their culture, including their religions, politics, economics, science, and much more.

Theatre

Theatre is a form of fine art that usually uses actors to perform the experience of a real or imagined event before a live audience. The performers may communicate this experience to the audience through a combination of gestures, speech, song, music, and dance.

Whether it focused on recreating events or telling fictional stories, the theatre has been an important part of human culture for more than 2,500 years. Some are related to political or spiritual ideologies, while others are based purely on artistic interests. Some have even influenced social change.

Cinema

Cinema (film) is a series of still images that create the illusion of a moving image. It’s a form of art that is used to tell stories or expose reality.

Film is a popular type of entertainment, but it’s also considered an important art form. Films are cultural artifacts created by specific cultures which can be used as a powerful way to educate and influence people.
